To date, we have received monies in the amount of $36,163.48 to the Ellen Perry Scholarship at Penn State. As you may remember, this scholarship fund was named after our long-time friend and former associate athletic director Ellen Perry. She was part of the Penn State athletic staff from 1966 until her retirement in 2002. Ellen’s responsibilities included not only her work for women’s basketball, but for student-athlete services for all men’s and women’s programs. Penn State has over 800 student athletes in 29 sport programs. Many of these students receive only partial scholarships and nearly 300 receive NO financial aid at all from the University.
The purpose of the Ellen Perry Scholarship fund is to provide recognition and financial assistance to any full-time undergraduate student who has an outstanding academic record, is proficient in any sport and on a varsity athletic team. This scholarship is now activated! As of May 1, 2005, we met the minimum amount needed to begin disbursement. The first scholarship from this fund was awarded in the Fall of 2005. The recipient of this endowment for the years 2005-06, 2006-07 and again for 2007-08 is Gayle Hunter, a member of the Women’s Track and Field team. The Lady Lion Cager Club is proud to be a sponsor of this scholarship on behalf of our good friend Ellen Perry. The Lady Lion Cager Club and Ellen thank you very much for your continued contributions and support to Athletics at Penn State University.
The initial principal of this fund, $25,000.00, will be contributed to The Pennsylvania State University for the above stated purpose by friends and associates of Ellen Perry. Additional contributions may be made by interested persons or organizations by contacting: Athletics Development, The Pennsylvania State University, 157 Bryce Jordan Center, University Park, PA16802, Attention: Michelle Davidson.
